TUESDAY REVIEWS

CROSS BRONX #1
Ivan Brandon and Michael Avon Oeming
IMAGE COMICS

I have run PR for this book, so it would seem as though I was of the opinion it would be good. That is not, in any sort of stretch of the imagination, the case. It was great. I am not certain but I would suggest that when the year is done that this book garners awards. From the first page, the stylistic characters and setting, the images and dialogue, all beckon the reader to dig in further, and beyond storytelling, the story told was one that was unfamiliar, interesting on many different levels, and of building intrigue. Enter Scene one and a horrible criminal gang is wiped out, violently and relentlessly. Police respond, and Detectives lead an investigation and realization that a weapon left behind on scene for investigators to discover was a weapon formerly used by an officer, that is before his death. Who killed the gang members? And will the clues left behind add up to a resolution? A mother left behind, rosary beads and candles, the CROSS Bronx evokes God, religion and the pursuit of answers that might not be popular. The writing is excellent. The art is fantastic. If you like police stories, this will be one of the best.

CONTENT 2
Gia-Bao Tran

Back in 2003 Gia-Bao Tran sent to me a book called Content, it was his first effort and was self published. I thought it was an intriguing beginning, if not perfect certainly made me look forward to issue two. It has been a wait, no doubt, but issue two is here. Well sort of, you can pre order your copy, but I got my own sent by GB Tran. Undoubtedly you will want to order issue one, from Diamond, as that book is reoffered through them. Content 2 is far better than issue one, and beyond that it tells stories that you would not find anywhere else. There is a brilliant sense of storytelling and honest emotion in four stories about interaction and communication. Do you hear when other people talk? Do they hear you when you talk? I think that this book is well worth checking out, but beyond the stories to see how a story is told well, without men in tights and capes, and about things that have really not been shown in comic form much at all previously.

CONTENT 2
Gia-Bao Tran

"If a tree falls in the wood with no one around, does it make a sound? More importantly, if a cell phone escapes from its owner for a night of brothels and murder, does its owner's sister's admirer's mother care? Four stories woven together by shared experience and missed connections. An examination of the threads that bind us, and a meditation on how our world grows smaller the more we live... with cell phone sex."

CONTENT 2 is 56 pages, oversized and Black & White for $ 5.00. Pre-Order with Diamond Order Code SEP06 3268. Also, offered again is CONTENT issue 1. 40 pages Black & White for $ 3.00 U.S. Pre-Order with Diamond Order Code SEP06 3269.
