I think it is now Fall

last I looked it was early Spring... so I missed Summer

By Alex Ness

Weather has caused me to suffer two days of migraines as I write this. If my words seem stranger than normal, it must be because of that. Or not. Also I want to publicly thank Steve Pyskoty Olle for his support of pop thought. He is a friend of mine and others on pop thought, and his incredibly lovely wife Charlene has written for pop. I am in his debt. On to the reviews!!

REVIEWS From Alternative Comics

RABBIT HEAD
$4.95, B/W
by Rebecca Dart

This is an odd book, but one worth a look. It is wordless, and tells its story through multiple voices (ok, views - it is silent after all). The book is an experiment in story telling wherein the rabbit in the title, dressed in odd, strange garb stands aside a grave. The story then moves through time and perspectives to show the reader a Western movie but also a surreal Bergman like drama. By the end one knows more than at the beginning and the story comes full circle. I think for five dollars this is a little pricey and I did not love it. But, if you tire of simple, status quo story telling techniques I highly recommend this. It is a means to understanding a tale through different views. As such it is worth reading even if this is not your cup of tea.

SALMON DOUBTS
by Adam Sacks
$14.95

This is an animal fable. A salmon considers all the things a salmon would, if it could, why was I hatched, what is my place in the food chain, who are my leaders, what is my place or role in the school, shouldn’t I spawn with that fish over there... which when considered, are not so different from the questions of our own existence. As I said this is a fable so the intent is to tell a simple tale with far more meaning beneath the surface. The salmon look the same, because of course they are to our eyes fish, but the voice the writer gives the main characters/fish clearly delineates them, the salmon from one another. You may well think this is a weird book, I mean fish right? Well you’d almost be right. This is a concept that is weird but in the essence of it allows the reader to consider through other means our existence. We face many problems and issues in life, yet aren’t we all asking the same questions? For the record I am not a fan of eating salmon, and I do not quite know how salmon can be considered endangered when you can buy them for 4 dollars a can, (or less), but that is irrelevant. Well not to me but to you the reader. Buy this book if you want to see a story told in such a way that you learn something about yourself.

SOME FRIENDS

Mark Evanier has a blog in which he discusses everything, politics, entertainment, greats of the comics industry and as an assistant of the great Jack Kirby, he has a lot of interesting information to share. Check out his News From ME (ME= Mark Evanier).

Mike Zeck is an artist who is a nice fellow, and brilliant talent. His work is always evolving and I cannot believe that he has not returned to any book full-time yet. If it is the comic book publishers who are not hiring him, then I shake my head at the insanity. In any event, check out his site, and pick up a damned t-shirt or something.
